Assessment

The early process where a therapist gathers information to understand what is going on and how to help.

An assessment is the early part of therapy where the clinician gathers information about what brought the client in, relevant history, current strengths, and what the client is hoping for. It can include conversation, brief questionnaires, and sometimes more formal testing. The result helps shape a treatment plan and gives the client a clearer picture of next steps.
