Fight, flight, or freeze is a common name for the body's automatic survival responses to perceived threat. The nervous system shifts very quickly into mobilized energy (fight or flight) or shutdown (freeze) without conscious choice. Understanding these patterns can take some of the shame out of strong reactions and point toward skills that help the body settle.
