Trauma

A response to an event or series of events that overwhelms a person's ability to cope and can leave lasting effects.

Trauma describes the response to events that overwhelm a person's usual ability to cope. It is shaped by what happened, but also by context, support, age, and many other factors. Two people can experience similar events and respond very differently. Trauma can show up in the body, in relationships, and in how a person sees themselves and the world. Trauma-informed therapy supports recovery at a careful pace.
